Longtown, Carlisle was one of the Central Ammunition Depots chosen prior to WW2 to store ammunition as Britain re-armed for the potential war with Nazi Germany. Central Ammunition Depots played a crucial role in WW2 as they were strategically located UK wide. This meant that replacement ammunition was never far from nearby MOD bases.
In 2023, construction started to redevelop the site again as technological advancements made the old facility redundant. A new storage facility was required as a distribution centre for the North of England and Scotland. It will mainly be used for large equipment such as engines for all three UK armed forces, the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force. the new distribution centre will be 75,000 m2, the size of 12 football pitches!
SPEL manufactured a large range of SuDS compliant stormwater treatment devices for the site, including 3no. SPEL ESR Full Flow stormwater treatment devices, 1no. SPEL ESR Bypass stormwater treatment device and 1no. SPEL Smartceptor hydrodynamic vortex grit separator to protect the site from pollution incidents and ensure that stormwater run-off was treated to required SuDS standards before leaving the site.
Â
MOD sites very often use SPEL products on their sites, due to SPELs high quality (especially our 25 Year Warranty) and technical backup, they often chose high specification products, such as our 2 Chamber Puraceptor models and often have double skin tanks for secondary containment in case of a leak. In this circumstance rigorous SuDS compliance was required and SPEL could provide it with full WRc and HR Wallingford certification.
