Digital Realty is an owner and operator of carrier-neutral data centers across the world. A carrier-neutral data center is not tied to one specific connectivity provider and therefore businesses using carrier-neutral data centers usually have much great options in terms of bandwidth required and pricing structures. Digital Realty operates all over the world, especially in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Asia Pacific with over 300 data centres in over 25 countries. In Amsterdam alone Digital Realty operates 13 data centres as this is a great location for a carrier- neutral data centre as there are main connectivity suppliers giving Digital Realty’s customers much greater choice and better prices.
SPEL have been very privileged to provide a solution on two of Digital Realty’s data centres in Amsterdam to capture, store and then pump collected rainwater throughout the AMS13 and AMS14 data centres. This will provide water for cooling the data centre equipment that is much cheaper and more environmentally friendly than using large amounts of mains water. SPEL manufactured a Wrc Approved horizontal package pumping station in our 500 Series (3.5m dia.) tank with a total capacity of 115,000 litres to provide ample water for cooling the data centres computer equipment.
SPEL fitted out the tank complete with a calming inlet, 8” stainless steel internal pipework with external flanged connections for connection to the nearby valve chamber. 4no. Grundfos pump pedestals were also factory fitted within the pumping station to suit the clients 4no. specified Grundfos pumps (which SPEL also provided). The unique design of this pumping station was that 2no. of the submersible pumps required 8″ stainless steel pipework, while the other 2no. pumps required 2 1/2″ stainless steel pipework.
The unit was fitted with an inlet into one of the access shafts which incorporated a SPEL in-tank debris filter as often used on our Rainsave Rainwater Harvesting systems. Within this detailed pumping station design SPEL provided a large range of monitoring equipment including pressure sensors and ultrasonic and float switch level monitoring equipment.
