Chester Zoo is an internationally renowned zoo based in Chester, England. It size is clearly shown in the fact that it is the most visited zoo in the UK and covers over 128 acres. Chester Zoo employees around 1000 staff and has over 21,000 animals for its visitors to see.

A foul water pumping station and a surface water pumping station were required for a new section being developed at Chester Zoo.

The foul water pumping station utilised was a SPEL Wrc Approved horizontal pump station in our 300 Series (1.8m dia.) range with a total capacity of 12,000 litres to allow for the 24 hour storage required under building regulations. The GRP pumping station was fitted and tested in our factory with all the required guide rails, pump pedestals, valves and sump as required. The pump used were high quality Grundfos pumps that will be pumping sewage at around 8.5 l/s with a 4.8m total head and rising main of around 20 metres long. The pumps will run on a duty/standby arrangement to reduce the general wear on the pumps as much as possible. The associated float switches and control panel were supplied as part of the package and as the control panel was being mounted outside, SPEL provided a lockable kiosk for the control panel to be situated inside.

SPEL have also provided a vertical surface water pumping station and a SPEL Rainsave rainwater harvesting system for various different parts of the site to accommodate their increasing number of animals!

The Vertical Pumping Station was a SPEL WRc Approved ‘V-Series’ Packaged pumping Station for pumping surface water. Vertical chambers are often used for surface water pumping because there is no requirement for 24 hour emergency storage, unlike foul water pumping stations. The Grundfos pumps will be pumping at around 10 litres per second at a total head of 4m along a 50m long rising main. As with the ‘H-Series’ Pumping Station above, SPEL provided the control panel, lockable kiosk for external mounting of the control panel and associated pump pipework and float switches.
