The Missing Link refers to a three-mile stretch of single-lane carriageway on the A417, between the Brockworth bypass and Cowley Roundabout in Gloucestershire. This section has long been recognised as a bottleneck and environmental concern, and the recent improvement works aim not only to ease traffic flow but also to incorporate sustainable drainage and pollution control measures.
SPEL provided a large range of SuDS certified products on this scheme which will play a huge part in reducing pollution into our waterways. Road networks are often overlooked when it comes to pollution so it is great to be involved in this one where it has been taken seriously. Our high quality products will protect the environment and ensure the site complies with local SuDS mitigation indices.
The Missing Link had long been recognised as a problem area, with the single-lane carriageway causing significant congestion and increased emissions. Its proximity to local waterways created an elevated risk of polluted road runoff, and the project needed to meet strict local SuDS mitigation indices. SPEL was tasked with supplying durable, certified components capable of handling heavy traffic loads while delivering long-term environmental protection.
Our solution was to supply a comprehensive suite of SuDS-certified systems. Both SPEL Bypass Treatment Systems and SPEL Smartceptor Vortex Separators were used depending on the removal rates, storage capacities, and flow rates required on each area of the highway. SPEL StormCheck Flow Control Chambers were used to allow rapid installation on site, thanks to their completely off-site built design, allowing for a ‘plug-and-play’ solution on site. These products not only meet environmental standards but are also engineered for durability, ensuring the scheme is future-proof and requires minimal maintenance. As a result, the A417 Missing Link project now benefits from reliable, high-quality infrastructure that protects local waterways, complies with regulatory requirements, and demonstrates a clear commitment to environmental responsibility.
The storage tanks were provided as cesspool foul storage tanks which were used for the temporary site offices. The Full Flow Treatment System was utilised to treat the run off from the crusher compound, and the SPEL Puracaptor Full Retention Separator was used for a site compound.
