The Haggs adit, the name for the mine water drainage tunnel located at the abandoned Haggs mine was causing significant pollution into the River Nent. Up to 3 tonnes of harmful metals were released every single year into the River Nent from this one pollution source, so a treatment solution was essential.
The main treatment system is a nature based solution over three treatment ponds with a pioneering layer of natural materials that are used to treat the bulk of the pollution. The mine water then goes through a odour control system (which is where the SPEL Tankstor’s are used) before going through an aerobic reedbed for polishing before releasing into the River Nent.
SPEL provided 3no. very bespoke SPEL Tankstor 200 Series (1.2m diameter) Tanks with 26,000 litre capacity each. SPEL were looking at providing the tank in a single piece at around 24 metres however following a route survey, the access was too small to accommodate this length of tank. Therefore in a first ever for SPEL, we provided the tank in 2 halves, interconnected on-site with a large flexible coupling. The treatment process required the full length of the tank, and therefore two shorter tanks could not be used.
Due to the chemicals being used as part of the treatment process, SPEL manufactured the tank with a SPEL HCR (Highly Chemical Resistant) Internal Liner. Due to the length of the tank, a ‘SPECIAL’ specification tank shell was required to ensure the extra length and 2 piece construction did not weaken the tank structure.
The tank was supplied with 2no. 800 x 1250mm rectangular access shafts with GRP ladders and GRP lids. A 600mm diameter access shaft supplied with a GRP bolt down lid was fitted within the 800 x 1250mm access shaft to provide large access to the 600mm diameter access shaft.
