East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust are investing over £80 million on its Colchester Hospital. The largest development at this hospital is the new Dame Clare Marx building orthopaedic centre for patients who need surgery on bones, joints and muscles. The building’s objective is to reduce cancelled operations and waiting times for these operations. The new building is being constructed with 289 pre-built modules for rapid construction.
Two SPEL Smartceptor’s were chosen due to their vertical design meaning it has a very small footprint and almost no above ground land take (all it needs is 1 manhole cover), which was essential on a very space-confined site. The stormwater run-off being treated is from the patient drop-off, disabled and ambulance access, and therefore the low traffic movements per day on this part of the site meant the site was identified to have a ‘low’ pollution hazard level, which the SPEL Smartceptor meets on its own.
The single piece, off-site built design was also inline with the preferred construction methodology for the site, with as much being built off-site for fast installation and a high level of build quality and accuracy.
